Flea and Worm Control

Fleas

flea.jpgBecause of Aucklands warm humid climate fleas are an issue year round, so it is important that your pet is kept up to date with its flea treatment. There are an array of topical products on the market these and some of these also treat roundworms.

We recommend using one of the following: Advantage, Frontline or Revolution. Each of these products has its particular advantages so please ask one of our qualified veterinary nurses for advice on what flea treatment product would be suitable for your pet.

It is important that you treat all of the animals in your house and often it is necessary to treat your house as well with a fogger such as Indorex.

Fleas are the major cause of skin disease in cats and dogs. It is vital to keep your pet flea free.

Roundworms and Tapeworms

It is very important that your pet is wormed regularly  for their health and also for yours as they can on rare occasions be passed to humans, and in particular children.

Worm burdens are greatest in younger animals where they are passed in the mothers milk (cats and dogs) and across the placenta (dogs)

At Abbotts Way we recommend the following worming regime for both cats and dogs.

  • Every two weeks until twelve weeks of age
  • Every month from twelve weeks to six months of age
  • Every three months thereafter.

We recommend Drontal or Endogaurd which cover both roundworms and tapeworms.

Alternatively for those that find giving their pet a tablet difficuilt (most cat owners!) there is the option of using a combined flea and worm treatment - Advantage Multi or Revolution. These products do not treat tapeworms which are less of an issue than roundworms but if you keep your pet flea free then once a year worming for tapeworms is sufficient.
